Got the green light to buy some toys! In case you need a reminder, here is a refresher on what we’re working with

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So on to the toys, starting with this Chinese market radio

Kinja'd!!!

It’s an RCD330plus - not that the model number should do anything for you unless your a VW fanboi. What matters is it’s a direct OEM replacement with USB and Bluetooth built in. Had the wife really wanted it, another $120 I could have gotten one with apple play as well. She just wants the Bluetooth. The touchscreen also takes her 2015 model Bug in to the year 2015 versus the rcd310 that is in there, making it feeling like early 2006.

Picked up a GTI rear view mirror for 99¢ plus $9 shipping from eBay to replace the tiny round beetle mirror. Unsure of the actual fitment possibility, but the price is worth the risk. Hopefully it works and we can have a little better view of what’s happening behind the car.

There is a decent amount of road noise coming from the trunk/hatch area. I picked up some sound insulation stuff that I plan on laying down to hopefully keep it quiet back there. I’ve never used the stuff before, however those who have seem to be very happy with the results. Much like the rear view mirror, the price was cheap enough that I’m down to take the risk of it not working.

And for the thing that I will probably get made fun of for...slip on exhaust tips.

Do keep in mind this is base model car with minimal options on it. The goal is enough small stuff to make a decent change in overall feel. There are a few things out for delivery today and the rest coming in throughout the remainder of the week. Actual car updates to come!

What’s with that rear trunk, where’d the engine go.

Kind of bums me out that this uses the same radio as a Golf SE lol.

OTOH, I clicked on this to compliment the nice, clean design of the HU compared to almost anything out there. That’s one thing VAG does well — they more often put “the good stuff” in the cheaper cars and amortize the cost over many different lines.

why is that?

pretty much all the VWs from the early 2000s to current have the ability to swap around radios I think up to current models. There are some stipulations to that, but from what I found it’s really really open ended. I kind of like what they did with it. From my very scientific google searching, around 2012 VW realized cars are coming with bluetooth pretty standard so they made a radio with it built in to retrofit older models for bluetooth. That one is a little funky looking at still costs around $300. The one I picked up is a little sketchy, but I think it’ll work great.

did a front engine fwd swap and massaged the body lines a little - you know it’s a pretty major build

They do make nice looking, and more importantly, EASY TO USE HUs. The fact that they can be swapped around is great as well. It’s stupid that the industry has moved away from this model.

Slip on rings are just a tiny bit of bling that in the end of things dont add or subract anything.

Its not as bad as the disconnected exhaust bumper holes like the lexus F cars have but I personally wouldnt spend that money.

Now if you buy eye lashes for the bug, thats a paddlin

the better equipped bugs have snazzy little exhaust tips so trying to stay within the world of maybe oem style. $15 for a pair of them, could probably flip them for $20 and come out okay if they don’t feel right.

I want the eye lashes bc they’re ridiculous, but the wife said no dice.

could be wrong, but pretty sure that the newer models support android too. If not OEM support, they’ve been hacked with to work.

If you’re really interested, the base rcd330plus needs a RAM upgrade and a software flash to run the carplay capable version, but your buttons on the right are going to be mislabled. From what I saw on ebay, same statement applies to android auto support.

the newer model is called MIB2 or something

cost like 1k to swap everything over .... not a $200 solution :(

Yes! That has a nice look to it, but really not worth the swap for the $$. Not like this stuff at least.
